Common Classifications of Laminate Sheets

Interior designers prefer laminate sheets as their first choice for both residential and commercial spaces due to their exceptional durability and exquisite designs. Laminate designs are labeled based on the purpose, such as kitchen laminate. When it comes to picking suitable laminate designs for your furniture or elevating the look of your room, it is vital to understand how laminate sheets are classified and how to select the right one. That said, continue reading as we bring you a common classification of laminate sheets that you should know. Read on!

1. Based on Pressure Applied

The pressure applied during the manufacturing process plays a key role in classifying laminates.

  • High-Pressure Laminates (HPL): High-Pressure Laminates are made by compressing kraft paper with thermosetting resins under high pressure, making them exceptionally durable.
  • Low-Pressure Laminates (LPL): Low-Pressure Laminates are made by soaking decorative paper in melamine resin and directly applied over the particle or fiber-board (MDF & HDF) under low pressure.

2. Based on Surface Finish

Laminates can also be classified based on their surface finish.

  • Matte Finish: Matte-finish laminates impart a velvety appearance that diffuses the contrast of heavier colour tones, allowing other colours to stand out as well. Matte finish laminates feature a clean and flat diffused effect on the surface and are ideal for corporate office applications such as on countertops, cabinet doors, and wall panels.
  • Textured Finish: These are decorative laminates that impart an aesthetic and vibrant effect. They come in decorative floral, wavy, and abstract patterns that give a classy look. Textured laminates are an ideal choice to embellish accent wall panels and countertops (based on the overall theme of the interior decor).
  • Solid Coloured: Solid-coloured laminates are the most popular among all surface finishes and suit all interior types, be it residential or commercial spaces. They are single-colour laminates that come in a myriad of options. Based on the overall theme of the interior decor, they can be used on doors, kitchen countertops, and furniture.
  • Metal Laminates: As the name suggests, the metallic laminates impart a metallic look. The lustrous reflective finish results from the top metallic decor layer that is perfect for wall panels in automobile showrooms and office cabinet doors.
  • Gloss Finish Laminates: Gloss-finish laminates give a lustrous reflective look. The Laminates are visually stunning, which is why they are ideal for countertops in hotels and cafés.
  • Wood Grain Laminates: Wood grain laminates are perfect when looking for a natural wood appearance. Resembling different species of natural wood, they come in a range of grain patterns. From doors to countertops, wood grain laminates are perfect for traditional interior design themes.

3. According to Thickness

Based on thickness, laminates can be segmented into two types:

  • Compact Laminate Sheets: Compact laminates range from 2 mm to 25 mm and provide stability and strength that is essential to prevent cracks.
  • Regular Laminates: Regular laminates range between 0.6 mm and 1.5 mm and require an adhesive to bind firmly onto the base.

4. According to Use

Laminates can be bifurcated based on their application or where they are used. These are:

  • Industrial Laminates: Industrial laminates are renowned for their exceptional strength, durability, and sturdiness that stand the test of time with high levels of tolerance against scratches and daily wear and tear.
  • Decorative Laminates: Aesthetically appealing designs are the hallmark of decorative designs and are proven to be fit for spaces requiring vibrant ambience, such as kitchen laminate designs.
