This case study explores how the Greenlam WST project supported Niharika, a Grade 3 student who often copied work without understanding, even though she wished to learn on her own. It highlights the project’s nurturing approach and the meaningful improvements in her learning ability and confidence.

The Greenlam WST project implemented a supportive and guiding approach to address Niharika’s challenges. The key interventions included:

  • Building Confidence and Trust: Creating a safe and approachable environment where Niharika felt comfortable seeking assistance without judgment. Teachers actively encouraged her efforts and emphasised that asking questions was a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • Open Communication and Guidance: Explicitly informing Niharika that support was readily available whenever she encountered difficulties. She was encouraged to approach teachers whenever she did not understand something, assuring her that her queries would be addressed patiently and effectively.
  • Promoting Independent Work: Gradually encouraging Niharika to attempt tasks on her own before seeking help. This involved breaking down assignments into smaller, manageable steps and providing initial guidance to set her on the right path.
  • Focus on Understanding: Shifting the emphasis from rote copying to genuine comprehension. When Niharika sought assistance, the focus was on explaining the underlying concepts and meanings rather than simply providing answers.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Consistently acknowledging and praising Niharika’s efforts and any signs of independent work or understanding, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement aimed to build her self-esteem and encourage further independent engagement.

The intervention made a big difference in Niharika’s academics and overall confidence:

  • English Skills: Niharika became much better at reading fluently and understanding what she reads. She improved her spelling, built a stronger vocabulary, and learned how to interpret written text more effectively.
  • Division Skills: She learned to solve division problems accurately and confidently while gaining a clear understanding of the basic Math concepts behind it.
  • The Greenlam WST project brought a meaningful shift in Niharika’s academic habits and confidence. With consistent support, open communication, and encouragement to think independently, she gradually overcame her tendency to copy. Her improvement highlights how combining academic guidance with confidence-building can truly empower a child to learn and succeed.
