Mahira, a Grade 3 student, struggled to retain study topics. She often forgot lessons soon after learning them, affecting her academic progress and confidence.
Through the Greenlam WST Project, focused support was provided using:
- Group-Based Learning: Mahira was integrated into small study groups, promoting peer learning and collaboration. This approach aimed to create a supportive environment where she could engage more freely with her classmates.
- Hands-on Tools: Math toolkits and visual aids like number charts, counting blocks, and shapes were used to make concepts clearer and engaging for students.
- Peer Support System: A peer mentoring framework was established, allowing Mahira to seek clarification and assistance from her peers, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.
- Interactive Discussions: Teachers facilitated group discussions on math topics, enabling students to express their doubts & build confidence in understanding concepts.
The intervention led to significant positive changes in Mahira’s academic and social behaviour:
- Mahira began to remember topics for longer, showed improved understanding, and actively participated in class. Her confidence and academic performance increased.
- Mahira began actively participating in group discussions, demonstrating a willingness to share her ideas and ask questions when concepts were unclear.
- Engaging with peers in a collaborative setting boosted her self-esteem, enabling her to respond promptly and confidently during classroom activities.
Mahira is now confident, engaged, and proactive in her learning. The visual and interactive strategies helped her overcome memory challenges and accelerated her overall growth. Through targeted group-based interventions and peer collaboration, she transitioned from being reserved and disengaged to becoming an active, assured participant in the classroom. This case highlights the strong impact of cooperative learning in improving student engagement, confidence, and social integration.
